Full Description

Welcome to Spreacombe

We have 6 well equipped cottages to sleep 4 or 5 (groups of up to 26 can be accommodated) in a hidden woodland corner of Devon.

Your holiday cottage is set in the 450-acre grounds of Spreacombe Estate, owned by the Dennis family for over 60 years. The estate can be found in the secluded Spreacombe Valley, offering easy access to North Devon’s extensive coastline, with the golden sandy beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde only a ten-minute drive. This, together with the peace and quiet of our countryside location, brings visitors back to our holiday cottages year after year.

All you’d expect from Devon is on your doorstep – quaint villages, traditional pubs, rolling moorland, wooded valleys and breathtaking beaches.

Activities in the Area

BEACHES … Woolacombe, Croyde, Saunton – some of the best beaches in the UK lie within four miles of your holiday cottages at Spreacombe Gardens, with superb expanses of golden sand, dunes, rock pools and cliffs. Also, of course, the fantastic sea makes our coastline renowned as a mecca for watersports of every kind.

BIRDWATCHING … The RSPB Chapel Wood is adjacent to us, and indeed we have our own entrance to this site. It takes its name from the remains of Spreacombe Chapel, a scheduled Ancient monument dating from 1270. Frequently seen in both the RSPB and our woodlands are Woodpecker (Great Spotted and Green), Buzzards, Nuthatch, Owls and Ravens.

WALKING… We can promise walkers spectacular views from the South West Coastal path at nearby Baggy, Morte and Bull Points, where seals can often be seen or walks across Braunton Burrows, a dune ecosystem of world importance. Follow the link for more information on local walks, Croyde, Lee Valley and Georgeham are the nearest places to Spreacombe mentioned.

CYCLING… The specially prepared Tarka Trail cycle route is off road and can be picked up less than 4 miles from Spreacombe. This runs some 30 miles from Braunton via Barnstaple to Meeth and is essentially easy cycling with many cafes lining its route.

SIGHT SEEING… Our local village, Braunton, has a heritage centre, surfing museum, library and supermarkets as well as other shops and services. Four miles further on is the ‘capital’ of North Devon, Barnstaple, with its historic Pannier Market.
The nearby holiday resort of Ilfracombe has a picturesque harbour with surrounding Tors and offers a host of activities. From here you can take boat trips along the coast or a day trip to Lundy Island on board the MV Oldenburg.
You will probably also want to explore the Exmoor National Park – Lorna Doone country – a fifteen mile drive from your holiday cottage to the north, and the famous village of Clovelly with its steep cobbled streets. And if that’s not enough, there are plenty of local visitor attractions – from roses to rollercoasters – to appeal to everyone.

FISHING… Ilfracombe is a working harbour. It’s from here that you can experience a sea fishing trip or stay on dry land and buy some of the freshest locally caught fish. Rock pooling – well we would suggest Saunton Sands rock pools as being the best in the area.

GOLF… The local area hosts many golf courses of different standards ranging from Saunton Golf Club’s championship courses to many “Pitch and Putts” – something to suit every standard.

SURFING… Surfing lessons are available at Woolacombe, Croyde (10 minutes by car) and Saunton. People of all ages are now togging up in hired wetsuits and trying out a lesson. The more sedate body boarding is hugely popular. Boards and wetsuits can be hired or bought at most beach locations.
